For brief moments, the higher parts of Piura burst into a lush, green paradise, creating a tropical desert, a rare gem in the world of ecosystems.
This unique environment seems tailor-made for cultivating exceptional cacao; by day, dry desert winds sweep through the cacao groves, naturally protecting the trees from the dreaded Witch's Broom disease. At night, the air cools, but retains just enough moisture to nurture the cacao leaves in a jungle-like microclimate.
In the end, what truly sets Piura’s cacao apart is its remarkable genetics. The cacao pods found in this region usually contain around 90% white beans. Our team believes this cacao to be the descendant of cacao from the original wild strains that migrated through people from the neighboring Jaen and Amazonas valleys, further east from Piura. While other varieties struggled during their relocation, these white-bean pods found their perfect home in Piura's distinct ecosystem.
